Guardianship

All international students under the age of 18, and studying for a full academic year, must have a designated Education Guardian while in the UK. This provision helps to improve the communication between the college and the student's parents or carers, and ensures that there is always a local contact person available to act on behalf of the student in case of emergencies.

The Education Guardian should be resident in the UK, fluent in English, and, in most instances, be aged over 25. Students have the option to enlist the services of professional guardianship companies, or they may choose a family member or friend for this role. For those seeking assistance in selecting a suitable guardian, LSI College works with an AEGIS and British Council accredited partner, UK Guardians. https://www.ukguardians.co.uk/

The guardian’s details must be included on the accommodation and college registration forms and consent letters. Please let us know at the time of your application if you should require any assistance in selecting a guardian. Our college staff will be happy to help.

The role of a guardian is to be:

  • The student’s 24/7 contact
  • The parents or carer’s 24/7 contact
  • An intermediary between the school and the parent or carer
The nominated guardian must meet the following minimum criteria:
  • Permanent UK resident
  • At least 25 years old
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Available 24/7 in case of emergency
  • Lives within two hours’ drive of the college
  • Able to provide sufficient support to the student and their parent or carer
The guardian will be expected to give parental permission for:
  • Weekend exeats
  • Participation in extracurricular / social activities or trips
  • Changes to academic programmes
  • Extended student absences due to ill-health
The guardian will provide the following support:
  • Monitoring of academic progress – e.g. to arrange supplementary lessons
  • Dealing with attendance problems in college
  • Arranging airport transfers on arrival / departure for each term of study, as required
The guardian will also be expected to deal with emergency student situations, such as:
  • Same day provision of appropriate emergency accommodation should the student be unable to remain in their residence (through ill-health) or to attend college (e.g. due to suspension)
  • Immediate support for medical emergencies; in communication with the parent or carer, provide consent for medical procedures
