Student Interview
We interviewed the Deputy Head of the Student Council about student life at LSI College. Here's what she had to say about the college activities, leadership, and being part of the next generation of scholars.
1. What do you enjoy most about being a student here, both in and outside of classes?
Compared to other schools, I feel LSI has the friendliest and most welcoming community. I interact with people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and countries, and I've been able to form strong connections and bonds with them. I believe this is so important- learning alongside a strong community creates a positive and non-judgemental mindset towards learning.
2. What kinds of activities or experiences have helped you feel part of the college community?
Definitely the clubs- the debate club in particular has opened my mind to different perspectives in life. The student council has also bought people together- we have organised things to benefit the entire student body. From getting a coffee machine (that has been very popular) to organising a pizza party, the student council helps students step out of their comfort zone and feel welcome. This sense of agency is so important- we build the environment we want to be in.
3. How did you get involved with the Student Council?
It was an accident, actually! I thought my friend was going to apply, so I did too. But it turns out many people wanted me to be the Deputy Head. I started the year by wanting to make many connections and so I interacted with different friend groups. I think my openness was what lead to my election, and I have gladly stepped up to the responsibility- even leading the council in Head's absence.
4. Has being part of the Student Council changed how you think about leadership or working with others?
Absolutely. It's helped increase my confidence, and I have learned how important communication is. The biggest lesson has been learning to listen to other people- I need to know their opinions to help ALL students.
5. Do you feel your time at the college has helped you think differently about what you want to do next?
My goal is to be an astrophysicist! I started out with this big idea, and LSI College has provided me with concrete steps to reach it. It goes beyond the classroom- I've gotten advice on how to make a LinkedIn profile, knowledge about courses in careers lessons, ways to make my personal statement better, and I could learn about my options in the recent University Fair. If my dream is to reach the stars, LSI is the rocket fuel that helps me achieve those dreams.
